Nordic Stealth

Awning System.

The awning you don't see until you need it. Only a slim rail stays on the roof, the rest packs away inside the van. And at 15 kg it is up to 20 kg lighter than a normal awning.

Most awnings stay on the van all year. The big box sits on the roof whether you use the shade or not, and that never really made sense to us.

With us, the only fixed part is a slim aluminium rail. The sail, the poles and all the fittings pack into a bag inside the van, and when you drive off there is nothing to see.

That is why it is called NordicStealth.

The Rail Stays Put.

Three pieces of powder-coated aluminium join into one rail that clips onto the van's own factory anchor points on the roof with small adapters. No drilling, sealing or holes, and the rail can be taken off again without leaving a mark. It stays on, but changes nothing on the van permanently.

The marine fabric filters the sunlight, and under the awning there is plenty of room for a table, chairs and shade for the whole group. Six ground anchors and reinforced poles keep the sail taut, even when the weather turns, and you set it up the same way every time.

Into the track, up with the sail.

The edge of the sail slides into the rail's channel from one end, a bit like a zip. With the built-in pulley you do it yourself without tools, and afterwards you pack the sail away in the bag inside the van, so nothing is left on the roof but the slim rail.

Storage

Everything fits in one bag.

The sail, the poles, the anchors and all the fittings pack into one single bag measuring 123 × 20 × 20 cm. It can sit in the boot or under the bed until you need it, and when you drive there is nothing to see.

  4. 4Lower the rail down onto the anchor points.
  5. 5Tighten each adapter with the Allen key.
Step 2 · Every time

Set up the sail

  1. 1Feed the sail's keder edge into the rail from one end.
  2. 2Raise the four support poles.
  3. 3Anchor with the six ground stakes and tension with the straps.
  4. 4Adjust the angle and enjoy the shade.

How it mounts

Every van leaves the factory with fixing points on the roof, like the one in the photo. NordicStealth mounts onto them rather than beside them, so the rail sits on fixings the van was built with. No drilling, no sealant and no permanent changes to the van. The Fiat Ducato, Peugeot Boxer and Citroën Jumper are covered directly, and the Mercedes Sprinter and VW Crafter come with an adapter matched to the model, so the same rail and sail cover all five platforms.

Here in Norway you can get sudden gusts of wind, and then the ground anchors, fabric and guy-line points on a normal awning are underdimensioned. With NordicStealth you can secure it with a full six ground anchors, and the poles feel much more solid than the thin aluminium poles on a normal awning.

When I speak to people about their cassette awnings they all say the same thing: we hardly ever have it out, the slightest bit of wind and it has to go away. Yours looks phenomenal, premium and actually useful.

There are competitors using magnets for similar awnings, but your rail system seems much more secure while keeping a really clean look when the awning isn't installed.

The story behind

Built by a metalsmith. Tested in the real world.

I'm a trained stainless-steel metalsmith and I built kitchens for campervans at a dealer. His customers wanted shade but said no to awnings that ruined the van's clean look. So I built the first NordicStealth units by hand and tested them at the dealer for many months before production began.

Questions about the system?

A stealth awning is a campervan awning you barely notice when it's packed away. With NordicStealth, only a slim aluminium rail follows the roofline, while the sail, straps and poles sit inside the van. Unlike a big, bulky cassette awning, nothing gives away that the van is a campervan when it's parked in the city.

It fits the Fiat Ducato, Peugeot Boxer and Citroën Jumper from 2006 onwards. These three are essentially the same van and share the same factory anchor points on the roof, whatever the length. For the Mercedes Sprinter and VW Crafter, roof-mounted adapters make the same system fit those too.

No. The rail clips onto the van's own factory anchor points on the roof with small adapters. There's no drilling, sealing or holes, and you can take the rail off again without any trace left behind.

About 10 minutes once the rail is mounted, and you can do it on your own without tools. The edge of the sail slides into the rail's channel from one end, a bit like a zip, and then you tension it out. The rail itself is only fitted once, which takes about 15 minutes with an Allen key.

Only the slim rail stays on the roof. The sail, the straps and the ground anchors pack into the bag inside the van, for example under the bed, behind the seats or in a floor locker.

The sail is tensioned with six ground anchors and storm straps, and the reinforced poles keep it taut. It stands far more stable than a sun sail or a drive-away awning, and all the storm kit is included in the price. It has stood up in 15 m/s winds without problems.

Yes. The sail is marine canvas and water-repellent. It doesn't soak up water, so it never gets heavy and saturated, and you don't pack it away wet and clammy like a cheap tarp.

The rail can make a little noise at speed, and it will never be completely silent. But it's nothing compared to a big cassette awning mounted on the side of the van.

The ground anchors need a soft surface like grass or soil. Special anchors exist for harder ground, and a solution for asphalt and paving is something we're working on. We'd rather be honest about that than overpromise.

The Mercedes Sprinter and VW Crafter are covered with roof-mounted adapters, so the system fits directly. A solution for the Ford Transit and a version with a smaller sail for the VW T5/T6 are on the drawing board. If your van has roof bars with at least three mounting points, the rail can often be fitted that way. Write to us and we'll let you know when your model is covered.

The sail's Ø7.5 mm keder fits most existing keder rails. In time it will be possible to buy the sail on its own without the rail and adapters. Write to us if that's you and we'll keep you posted.

The rail sits at the roof edge, so an ordinary step stool is all you need when feeding the sail into the channel.

If you're only out two or three times a year, a cheaper solution is completely fair. NordicStealth is for you if you use your van a lot, care about how it looks, and want serious shade with nothing visibly mounted on the vehicle.
